Estrel Hotel Berlin
Incentives, Conventions & Entertainment

When I followed Ekkehard Streletzkis' invitation in September 2003, to join him and his wife Sigrid to celebrate the 6th anniversary of "Stars in Concert" at his Estrel Hotel, I was deeply impressed. Not only about the astonishingly authentic look-alikes from Las Vegas (portraying megastars such as Tina Turner, Elvis Presley, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson or Abba...), I was even more  impressed about the Estrel's unique convention- and hotel complex, which truly is a world of its own.

With 1,125 rooms, including 80 suites, the Estrel Hotel Berlin is Germany's largest hotel - and it is a design hotel. The modern complex opened its doors in September 1999 and although it's gigantic and originally developed as a centre for conventions, congresses, entertainment and lodging, it's not at all anonymous and also very well suitable for the individual traveller who likes the challenge. The feel-good feeling comes when you enter the glass covered atrium which is reflecting the atmosphere of an Italian 'piazza' surrounded by trees. On this piazza one will find a wide range of restaurants, bars, lounges and other meeting places. There is even a beer garden located directly on the bank of the River Spree.

The complex, comprising the Estrel Convention Center, Estrel Festival Center and Estrel Hotel, embodies the dream of its developer, Ekkehard Streletzki who always wanted a center for "meeting, experience and living–all in one." The achievement has garnered him the coveted title of "Hotelier of the Year 2000." The Estrel features exquisite guest rooms and stylish suites with generous proportions. Most of them are decorated in a contemporary, elegant style. Others offer the atmosphere of a traditional European Grand Hotel.

HOTEL HIGHLIGHTS, noted in my travel diary...

  • I just love the  250 sqm Presidential Suite , located on the 17th floor! It has become my 'home away from home' when I am in Berlin with my family. It's not comparable with any of Europe's glamorous hotel suites, not even in a 5-star-Leading Hotel. The Estrel's Presidential Suite - or better "Penthouse Suite" - occupies a floor for itself, offering an incomparable view over the rooftops of Berlin. The suite, which has been the owner's private residence while he was building his glass palace, is only reachable by a separate elevator. Even the most discerning VIP will be enthusiastic to stay here. The suite's 'foyer' is an exotic mélange of Italian marble, polished mahogany mouldings and English carpets, rare French antiques and original period paintings mixed with modern art. Three bedrooms, a living area, a dining room furnished like in a classic English Country House (also useful as conference and board room), lavish marble baths and a separate kitchen form a city oasis for those who demand the very highest standards. Nothing what one would expect in Europe's largest convention hotel!
  • All other 1.125 rooms are " Standard de luxe ", offering genorous  24 to 30 sqm of living space, air-condition, satellite televisions & video and radio, large desks, direct-dial telephones with mailbox, connections for fax, PC and laptop. An electronic locking system with internal bolts and spyhole ensures the personal security. The Estrel also offers special rooms adapted for the disabled .
  • Even more important: In the spacious suites with ensuite marble bathrooms you'll also find a  pantry kitchen equipped with a water boiler and coffee-maker, hidden behind a wooden closet. For me it's great as I just like a tea in the morning without being urged to go to the breakfast-room. In addition, all suites are appointed with the most modern technology including a laptop with Internet access and computer connections.
  • Contemporary Art: Throughout the hotel you'll see numerous pieces of antique furniture blending delightful with modern art. While building his convention and entertainment complex, hotel-owner and art collector Ekkehard Streletzki commissioned talented Russian artists to produce the art work. A very clever idea! Today, over 3000 original paintings are exposed on the walls in rooms, hallways, foyers and in the lobby.

With 14,000 square meters of space, the Estrel Convention Center, or ECC, can host up to 6,000 guests at a time for congresses, exhibitions, meetings and events of any kind. The main hall, Estrel Hall, is 12,912 square feet, connects through a glass bridge to 60 additional convention rooms, and also connects to the Festival Center via the spacious Foyer-I lounge. Some of the various events produced here in the past year are "Wetten, dass...?" a famous German television show; the conference of the leading federal party, SPD; the Miss and Mister Germany Contest; a boxing gala, featuring world and European champions and a World Championship heavyweight contest.

Streletzkis's main focus was a state-of-the-art sound and stage system. The Convention Center's construction satisfies the highest expectations. The facility features a system of slide rails and suspended ceiling trusses, flexible wiring and a concealable lift stage.

What impressed me most when I first visited the Estrel Hotel, was - as I said before - Ekkehard Streletzki's vision to bring a piece of Las Vegas to Berlin in order to entertain his guests on the highest level. He truly succeeded! Connected to the Convention Center and the Hotel is the 'Estrel Festival Center', which six nights out of seven hosts "Stars in Concert," a show paying tribute to legendary stars of the past and present. Authentic look-alikes from all over the world sing, play and perform live on a permanent stage. Up to 800 guests can enjoy the show in style, seated at tables and served with food and drinks. The 6th anniversary performance was a glamorous event and it is worth the money to book the show exclusively as part of your convention supporting programme.

My goal, as TV producer and Lifestyle journalist, is to feature unique personalities, who have really achieved something. Hotelier Ekkehard Streletzki is one of them. This wonderful modest man, who never likes to talk about his success, who constantly promotes others and always prefers to stay in the background, this great hotelier plays an important role in influencing the spirit of the times with his innovative ideas, visions and dreams. A single man succeeded to build Europe's largest hotel complex with a warm atmosphere and without any hotel group involved...that deserves respect! Therefore I would like to ensure that an increasing number of people, not only business-travellers but also weekenders who enjoy travelling, come to experience this unique hotel which is located just a few steps away from the River Spree and 15 minutes by car from Berlin's city centre (Kurfürstendamm).
