NATHALIE'S HOTEL PORTRAIT *
Hôtel du Palais
A palace hotel in Biarritz
Biarritz is first of all a golfing paradise. But it's also Europe's most fashionable sea resort, offering Thalassotherapy, a fully-fledged urban centre and first class hospitality in a prestigious environment.
Before I write about my preferred hotel, the 'Hôtel du Palais', I would like to write about an exceptional personality: Jean-Louis Leimbacher, the director of this unique palace hotel.
He is not only highly respected by his colleagues, he is also very well appreciated by his customers from all over the world. He is a true hotelier! Your stay will be always enhanced by the presence of your 'host'. It's this personal involvement that makes the difference compared to other 'Leading Hotels of the World'. Jean-Louis Leimbacher has been in Biarritz for over 10 years now, and he knows what his guests expect from "his" Hôtel: a warm welcome, elite service, charm and comfort!
The 'Hôtel du Palais' has always been the destination for people who enjoy life. "Bing Crosby was there, Frank Sinatra, Gary Cooper... and a couple who remained faithful to Biarritz to their last days, the Duke and the Duchess of Windsor", writes Guy d'Arcangues. "The Hôtel has never lost its soul and has thus secured for itself a future as great as its legendary past". Formerly the summer mansion of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenia, it is now among the most beautiful hotels in the world.
The magical setting between sea and mountains is simply unbeatable. Built on a majestic beach-front the palace is a luxury liner with its restaurants, lounges and boutiques, the Imperial Bar and the extraordinary swimming-pool. overlooking the sea and a silver necklace of sand along the blue of the ocean. Bathed by the Gulf Stream, the 'Basque Coast' enjoys a mild climate, all year round. For surfers and golfers, Biarritz has always been a favourite. Just outside the hotel's gates is golfing heaven, with ten courses vying for the golfer's affections, some of them stretching right down to the ocean.
But what I like the most: the 'Hôtel du Palais' radiates charm. The main hall, the private salons, the dining room and the grounds have all maintained their Second Empire style. "It's this style, neither passé nor pompous but elegant, that makes the hotel such a jewel in a seaside resort smiled upon by fortune and fashion" says the Marquis d'Arcangues. Carefully selected artwork and graceful intimacy create a pleasant, luxurious atmosphere. 132 Deluxe bedrooms and 22 Suites are also decorated in Second Empire Style and each year renovated. Irresistible aromas and flavours beckon you, whisking your spirits from the restaurant “La Villa Eugénie” (1 star Michelin by Jean-Marie Gautier), to the informal "Hippocampe" at poolside, down to the festive banquets in “La Rotonde”.
The 'Hôtel du Palais' remains an address of undeniable prestige, one of the last great palaces of international renown.
