NATHALIE'S HOTEL PORTRAIT *
Lake of Como
Don't you some times long to escape the hubbub of the city to a place where you can forget life's troubles for a while? You don't have to travel far to find one of the most beautiful parks, because it is discreetly located directly on the banks of Lake Como: the enchanting garden belonging to the aristocratic Villa d'Este residence. I think this hotel is one of the most beautiful in the world and that is why I would like to take you on a stroll through it, because those who have seen Villa d'Este will perhaps discover that there are still dreams that don't let you go!
The Grand hotel “Villa d'Este” - long regarded by hedonists and connoisseurs as the ultimate example of exquisite ambience - is a heaven. Perhaps it was even inspiration from above that made an Italian cardinal build the villa about 400 years ago. Later, Karoline of Braunschweig purchased the spacious property and organised - or so it is said - veritable orgies in the magnificent park. Today, the garden with its hand-made mosaic monuments is still regarded as one of the most beautiful parks in the world.
The Duke and Duchess of Windsor have walked down the romantic, narrow paths here as have Liz Taylor, Clark Gable, Woody Allen and other Hollywood stars, surrounded by the water fountains and pavilions. The real star stars, however, are those working behind the magnificent scenes, ensuring the satisfaction of the select clientele with their perfect unobtrusive service.
Do you need a helicopter to take you to dinner on the Cote d'Azur? Nothing is impossible in this Leading Hotel of the World ... especially since Ezio Indiani - former GM of the Hotel de Bergues in Geneva - took over the management in 2004.
You can really feel at home in the Villa d'Este - the cosy atmosphere is not at all at odds with the baroque opulence. We meet Joe Cocker in the foyer where once Bette Davis gave her last interview. And , former Chancellor of the then West Germany came often to drink a cup of tea on the terrace. He lived nearby in his “Villa Colina” on the eastern bank of Lake Como. You can also enjoy the Mediterranean flair of the Villa d'Este. How about a special weekend arrangement for about 650 dollars per person for a junior suite with a sea view, half-board and, of course, a champagne breakfast in bed!
The hotel has 180 rooms, 2 restaurants, a piano and beach bar, night-club and discotheque, 8 tennis courts, a sauna with Turkish bath, massage rooms, 3 swimming pools and a wonderful hairdressing salon. Nathalie can't resist it and, like Caroline of Monaco, Joan Collins and Sophia Loren, she goes straight for the beauty salon.
When the last fishing vessels have sailed across Lake Como and the lights on the opposite banks have started to flicker on, then ladies and gentleman, it's tim e for you to sit back to enjoy a wonderful candlelit dinner. Drink from life's golden cup of plenty. Here's to the health of Villa d'Este, because some times you shouldn't be satisfied with anything but the best.
