Monaco Yacht Show

The Monaco Yacht Show is the only luxury yachting trade event in the world with an exclusive super yacht focus. They range from 20m to 80m in length. Over a four-day period the Principality of Monaco becomes a forum for business professionals from the yacht industry. The recipe for success according to Event Director Luc Pettavino (Photo left with me) is the "exceptional setting of Monte-Carlo, the experienced organization team and the ongoing support of H.S.H. Crown Prince Albert of Monaco".

The French Riviera attracts 70% of the world fleet in peak season. Especially Monte-Carlo is a Superyacht paradise as Monaco's Port Hercules is one of the rare deep-water harbours along the Côte d'Azur. Thanks to a new 352-metre semi-floating harbour wall, the 'M.Y.S.' has become even more attractive to visitors, exhibitors and buyers than ever before. For the first time, the organizers have been able to increase the exhibition area both on land and afloat.

I had an exclusive look around, spoke to a number of manufacturers and service companies and visited some of the 85 luxury yachts presented by brokers, shipyards or yacht owners. I also attended several cocktails including the official inauguration, as well as the famous 'Captain's Party' and Edminston's traditional invitation.

Here's my summary:

SYL is a fast cruising sloop designed by German Frers, combining great sailing performance with an outstanding avant-garde design on board. During the Monaco Yacht Show, I was invited by Baron Egbert von Maltzahn (Managing Director of the "Porcelain Manufactory Nymphenburger", Munich, Germany) to visit this unique sailing vessel together with His Serene Highness Prince Albert of Monaco and His Royal Highness Prince Leopold of Bavaria. During this 45 minutes private visit, SYL was awarded with an exclusive Design Price. A very beautiful handmade shell-shaped Nymphenburg Volute porcelain bowl with celadon inglaze painting by the renowned New Yorker Designer Ted Muehling was offered by Egbert von Maltzahn to Xavier Bisbe, General Manager of the Spanish Shipyard "Barcos Deportivos", who is responsible for SYL's uncompromising interior.

The 43 meter long yacht sets new standards for her innovative solutions. She was built using Alustar alloy in Spain. On deck, the 20 meters long large cockpit becomes a fully covered deck saloon thanks to the automatic top which was produced by the same people from Torino, in Italy who do the hard tops for the most sophisticated German car manufacturers. On the foredeck there are two special compartments for two equal 7 meters long rigid tenders which become effective appendixes of the yacht while cruising. One of the dinghy compartments can be transformed in to a salt water swimming pool. For more information please click Yachtreview SYL

BERMIE was my preferred super yacht presented at the Monaco Yacht Show. During my visit, this awesome 49m motoryacht, built by Oceanco & CMN and finished 2001 in France with Andrew Winch as interior designer, was for sale. Great emphasis has been placed on flexibility of accommodation and maximum security. Bermie has the privilege of being the first yacht to comply with SOLAS rigorous standards for safety approved by the French Ministry of Transport and Bureau Veritas. Glass and stainless steel offer the contrasting translucency and sparkle. BERMIE has a huge deck space on three levels, connected by an elegant stairway, providing endless opportunities for entertainment. A large Jacuzzi stands at the forward end of the very open and versatile sun deck under the futuristic radar arch. Accommodation for up to 12 guests in 6 cabins. They all have lavish ensuite marble bathrooms with full-sized tubs and separate heads.

Latest news: Bermie has been sold at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show on 27.11.2003.

Click to enlarge Photos: Bermie offers all the comfort, luxury and technology which one would expect from a vessel of this calibre. Burr walnut furniture and curved walls with silvery joints complement the sophisticated, modern yacht atmosphere. Captain Jaques Conzales was a darling and showed me around. Unfortunately now Bermie is not for charter any more since it was sold.

The "Nymphenburger Porzellan Manufaktur", situated on the grounds of the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, Germany and still in possession of the Bavarian Royal Family Wittelsbach, has been producing the finest hand made German porcelain for over 250 years. I have always been an enthusiastic collector of these handmade pieces of art and therefore I was very positively surprised to meet the Managing Director and my long-time friend Baron Egbert Freiherr von Maltzahn at one of the Yacht Show's exhibition stands. Although he respects and preserves Nymphenburg's historical tradition, he is also aligning the manufacture to modern times by reanimating its earlier practice of supporting and working with contemporary talents.  In the last few years, Egbert and his team fitted not only Europe's most luxury homes but also numerous private yachts with well known interior designers. Prince Leopold of Bavaria, member of the Bavarian Royal family explained to me that the most important outfitting for a yacht in the time after the Second World War was for the yacht "Christina" for Aristoteles Onassis in 1956, for which various plates were painted based on designs by Colette de Jouvenel, Paris. Refer to Nathalie Gütermann / Nathalie's Lifestyle if you contact Baron von Maltzahn at the Porcelain Manufactory Nymphenburg. The world's oldest watch manufacturer has renewed its partnership with the Monaco Yacht Show for the fourth year. In the exclusive area reserved for Blancpain, I had the chance to review its limited edition watch collection - the new "Monaco Y.S. 2003" - designed solely for the 13th Monaco Yacht Show. The "Flyback Chronograph" will be available for men (150 models) and women (50 models). Blancpain, 1094 Paudex, Switzerland.
